In 1909, 11,000 boys participated in a Scouting rally organized by Lord Baden-Powell at the Crystal Palace in London, Great Britain. To Baden-Powell's surprise, a large number of girls also showed up. They had been practicing Scouting and demanded entry into the rally. Baden-Powell was impressed and he asked his sister, Agnes, to create a program just for girls. This was the beginning of Guiding.

For more information about their history see:

Wednesday May 12/10 -  Starting May 15, 2000, the water supply in the Town of Walkerton became contaminated with the highly dangerous O157:H7 strain of E. coli bacteria, from farm runoff into an adjacent well that was known for years to be vulnerable to contamination.

Many residents  began to simultaneously experience  symptoms of E. coli infection.  On May 21, an escalation in the number of patients with similar symptoms finally spurred the region's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Murray McQuigge, to issue a boil water advisory, warning residents not to drink the water.

At least seven people died directly from drinking the E. coli contaminated water,  and about 2,500 became ill.

The Town of Walkerton, Township of Brant and the Township of Greenock amalgamated January 1st, 1999 to become the Municipality of Brockton.

"Brockton" was chosen as the name of the new municipality using a combination of Brant, Greenock & Walkerton

The Walkerton Clean Water Centre is a world-class institute dedicated to ensuring that training and education about drinking water quality is available and accessible to owners and operators of Ontario's drinking water systems, especially to those serving small and remote communities.

Established in 2004, the Centre features a state-of-the-art technology demonstration facility, providing a unique opportunity for hands-on training and serving as a practical resource for operators and other water professionals.

Monday May 10/10 -  What is MasoniCh.I.P.?

The MasoniCh.I.P. program uses modern, police-approved techniques to create a child identification kit for the ones you love.

The kit collects photos, video, voice recordings, digital fingerprints, dental impressions, saliva swabs as well as traditional statistical information (height, weight, hair and eye colour, etc.).

This information is matched to work seamlessly with Ontario's law enforcement providers. By being so compatible, the critical indentifying information can be broadcast and shared more quickly than ever before to assist with the safe recovery of missing children...and even if you have an adult with a disability.

Thursday May 6/10 - Provocative and groundbreaking, Slow Death by Rubber Duck reveals how the living of daily life creates a toxic soup inside each of us.

Studies have shown that significant levels of toxic substances can leach out of commonplace items in our homes and workplaces. How do these toxins make their way inside us and what impact do they have on our health? And more importantly, what can we do about them? Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie, two of Canada's leading environmental activists, tackle these questions head on by experimenting upon themselves.

“A powerful reminder that what we do to Mother Earth, we do directly to ourselves. Read it to see why we have to change the way we live and get off our destructive path.” David Suzuki  (read a preview of the book here)

Wednesday April 28/10 -  Debbie Travis, the television personality known for her design ideas, is turning her attention to building community in a new show coming to CBC Television.

The Debbie Travis Show  has put out a call for nominations of Canadians who are active in their community and know how to make a difference. The best of these will be profiled on her new show. She's looking for unsung heroes — the firefighter who also runs the daycare, the volunteer who's run the Salvation Army kitchen for 20 years, the woman who is willing to look after your children if you are late home from work.

"And I think every community's got one," she said. "We want the whole country nominating your mother, your grandma, your brother, your sister, your uncle, your best friend, your neighbour, even yourself."

Travis said she hopes the program will bring a message of hope.

Nominations can be made until June 15 at The Debbie Travis Show website.

Tuesday April 20/10 - "We've demonized the illicit drugs -- like heroin, cocaine and cannabis -- but we enforce the message everyday, in every way, that alcohol is benign and that myth takes a devastating toll. The mythology we've created around alcohol is that it's okay to get blitzed out of your mind as long as you're not driving.” - Robert Solomon, lawyer, Professor Faculty of Law, University of Western Ontario.

Eighty-five percent of adults are current drinkers and the rates of binge drinking have almost doubled to 34% in 2007 from 18% in 2001. This is significantly higher than both Canada and Ontario averages.

How can Grey and Bruce counties find a balance in the use of alcohol and prevent risk-related harms? The Culture and Impact of Alcohol Use in Grey and Bruce, a forum discussing these issues, takes place on Thursday, April 22, 2010, 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm at the Stone Tree Golf & Fitness Club in Owen Sound. Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP by April 21, 2010 to the Grey Bruce Health Unit at 519-376-9420, ext. 1405.

Ban on Blunt Wraps and Little Cigars - Effective April 6, 2010, retail sale of little cigars, also known as cigarillos, and blunt wraps packaged in less than 20 units is no longer permitted. Minimum package quantities make the products less affordable and accessible to youth.

Smoke-Free Bar and Restaurant Patios - With the outdoor dining and patio season soon upon us, it is a good time to revisit the smoking rules in these locations. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act (Sec. 13, Reg. 48/06) prohibits smoking on covered or partially covered patios. The legislation is designed to protect the health of the public from second-hand smoke.  For more information, contact Public Health at 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 or visit our website at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca.
