Wednesday May 12/10 - Starting May 15, 2000, the water supply in the Town of Walkerton became contaminated with the highly dangerous O157:H7 strain of E. coli bacteria, from farm runoff into an adjacent well that was known for years to be vulnerable to contamination. Many residents began to simultaneously experience symptoms of E. coli infection. On May 21, an escalation in the number of patients with similar symptoms finally spurred the region's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Murray McQuigge, to issue a boil water advisory, warning residents not to drink the water. At least seven people died directly from drinking the E. coli contaminated water, and about 2,500 became ill. The Town of Walkerton, Township of Brant and the Township of Greenock amalgamated January 1st, 1999 to become the Municipality of Brockton. "Brockton" was chosen as the name of the new municipality using a combination of Brant, Greenock & Walkerton
