Flu Hits Hospital ERs.

Regional | by Kevin Bernard

Patients end up in hallways at one point during the peak.

Symptoms of the flu .... have hit local hospitals hard.

GBHS President and CEO Lance Thurston says things a bit better today, but they were swamped over the last few days with long waits in the local ERs and extra beds needed.

Thursday, he says they were in gridlock where they had to open up 19 additional beds at the Owen Sound hospital.

Those beds are not funded by the province, and Thurston says they have to pay for those out of general funding.

There were also 4 people on beds in the hallways, which the Hospital president says is almost unheard of in Owen Sound.

At this point, Lance Thurston says there are only about 7 available beds in the Owen Sound regional hospital,  there are 2 beds in Wiarton and 3 in Southampton.

If you do head to one of the local hospitals under the Grey Bruce Health Services umbrella, you may have a long wait in the ER department for help.

Thurston says they are seeing patients, but it is very busy still in all of his hospitals.
