Police Chief Gets Threats From Fraudsters

Owen Sound | by Claire McCormack

Fraudsters left a message for Owen Sound's Police chief telling him to pay up or face arrest.

Some fraudsters picked the wrong target when they dialed up a tax paying scam and ended up with the Chief of Owen Sound police on the other end of the line.

Chief Bill Sornberger received a call Thursday from a fraudster claiming to be a police officer working on a Canada Revenue Agency file; with the Chief's name on it.

The suspect left a voicemail message informing Sornberger that if he did not call them back immediately, they would come and arrest him.

Sornberger says he  will not be calling the fraudsters back.

Police say it's a popular "CRA scam" technique.

They warn, if you receive a message from someone saying they are the police or another type of government official and they threaten you with immediate arrest for not paying your taxes, or if they request immediate payment - simply hang up the phone.

Police say never make a "payment" to the CRA with a credit card over the phone regardless of how pressured they make you feel.

Fraudsters will target anyone in the community, hoping that you will not protect your information; or that you will give in to their pressure tactics and intimidation.

Owen Sound police say never give your credit information to someone who contacts you with a request like this.

They add if you have any doubt, always hang up and contact the particular government agency directly.

In March, the Owen Sound Police Service participated in Fraud Prevention month with other law enforcement agencies across Ontario where we reminded citizens to always be guarded and aware when it comes to their personal information and 'fear-mongering' by potential fraudsters.
