Markdale | by Claire McCormack

Report may suggest Grey Gables Long Term Care Home be closed

Markdale residents and Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen are bracing for another potential punch, on word that staff in Grey County are recommending closing the Grey Gables Long term care facility.

The community has been fighting plans to close Beavercrest Community school, and now rallies are planned to try and save the long term care home.

Organizer Debi Hughson says the peaceful rallies will show the community's support for the home.

Those rallies are set for this afternoon  and tomorrow from 2 until 5pm at Grey Gables in Markdale.

There will also be a group of people at Thursday's County Council Committee of the Whole meeting which begins at 9 AM.

County Staff are bringing a report to the meeting that suggests Grey Gables Long Term Care Home in Markdale be sold to the private sector with the intention that it remain a long term care home.

It recommends the county build an amalgamated long term care home in Durham to serve southern Grey County.

Meanwhile, Grey county is planning two public meetings on the plan.

One is set for March 30th from 7-9pm at Durham Community centre.

A second meeting is set for March 31st from 7-9pm at the Centre Grey Rec Complex in Markdale from 2-4pm.
