Geocaching at the LibraryOwen Soundby Bayshore News Staff Combining technology with nature.
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt using hand held GPS systems that incorporates excercise, the outdoors and technology. Ray Gilbert, Exectutive Director for Grey Bruce Trail Network says it's a great way for families and friends to get outdoors and appreciate some of the sights Grey Bruce has to offer. Individuals, or teams use a GPS system to locate containers called "geocaches" that contain treasure. Once found, the user can take the treasure, and replace it with something else for the next person. The kit includes a GPS unit, instructions and a guide to the trails in Grey and Bruce Counties. Geocaching kits are currently available at half of the libraries in Grey Bruce including Port Elgin, Hanover, Owen Sound, Meaford, Thornbury, Grey Highlands, Durham Region and Dundalk Each Geocaching kit is valued at two hundred and fifty dollars. Gilbert adds, that with further funding they are hoping to have geocaching kits in every library by next year. The Bruce Grey Trail Network has partnered with the Grey Bruce Partners in Health, the Grey Bruce Health Unit and the Bruce and Grey County Library systems to bring the program to libraries in Grey and Bruce. |
