Grade 9 students attending Bluewater District School Board schools will have a few more months to show off their math skills as next Monday's EQAO Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment has been postponed.
The testing was rescheduled for students to write in June 2020, following months of ongoing provincial labour action involving the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (OSSTF).
Yesterday Minister of Education Stephen Lecce announced public school boards will make local decisions about whether or not to proceed with the testing.
"The EQAO Grade 9 math test provides valuable information to students, families, and the province about how students are performing in critical math skills and concepts. It also supports improved teaching and learning. It should not be in jeopardy for our students.
Regrettably, due to escalation by union leaders and the withdrawal of services by OSSTF, some secondary students will not be prepared for assessment this Monday."
He goes onto say the labour disruptions are "unfair" and are "undermining student success".
A Statement from Bluewater says, "due to the ongoing provincial labour action involving the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (OSSTF), Bluewater District School Board is postponing the EQAO Grade 9 Mathematics Assessment scheduled to begin next week, to ensure that we provide a positive environment that supports success for our students."
The school board says it will continue to keep parents and students informed as new updates regarding provincial labour negotiations become available.
