Wiarton's Big Dig Will Cost More than Expected

A Big Dig Information Session

Downtown Wiarton's Big Dig revitalization project on Berford Street could have a bigger cost than first expected.

Public Works Director Lara Widdifield says the cost was 7.8-million-dollars but that has increased to just over 8-million.

She says the increased cost generally reflects the complexity of the project.

Those complexities include the depth of the new sewers and the phasing of the project from block to block so as to avoid the business core area during the prime summer season.

In addition there are amenities such as landscaping finishes, finalization of the design, along with market conditions at the time of tender and the competitiveness of the contractor bids.

The project received a 3-million-grant under the Connecting Link program and the town has approximately two million dollars in reserves dedicated to the big dig.

Widdifield says the rest--just over three million dollars--will be borrowed by the municipality.

The next public information meeting on the project is slated for Thursday, January 23rd, 6pm to 8pm at the Wiarton Community Centre.
