Changes to Holiday Restrictions for Businesses in Owen Sound

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Retailers will soon be able to open on four statutory holidays.

Retail businesses in Owen Sound are now going to have the option to open on select statutory holidays.

City council approved the minutes of the Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee at its meeting Monday, including the recommendation of a by-law to exempt local businesses from the Retail Business Holidays Act on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Family Day.

Coun. Richard Thomas, who sits on the committee, says in the past there were always businesses that could stay open, but they were limited by floor space and the number of employees.

"This just allows anybody that wants to stay open on (certain) stat holidays to do so," explains Thomas. "It's not a program that forces anybody to stay open, but gives them the option if they'd like."

The four stat holidays were chosen as they received the most support for staying open in a survey conducted by the city.

According to committee minutes, this will be done on a trial basis with the city able to amend the by-law to add or remove days should it choose.

The formal by-law is expected to be passed at council's next meeting.
