Doctor Shortage in South Bruce Peninsula

South Bruce Peninsula | by John Divinski

The area has lost three doctors in the last three years

The South Bruce Peninsula Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee has a lot of work ahead of it.

South Bruce Peninsula councillor and physician recruitment and retention committee member Kathy Durst says the area has lost three doctors in the past three years and orphan patient lists are growing.

Durst says the committee is working hard to sell the community to potential doctors that come to the area as locums.

She says they have "welcome packages" to try to entice them to stay in the community and be a family practice physician.

Durst points out they are not only looking for new doctors but are making efforts to appreciate the ones that are still in the region so that they will stay.

Councillor Durst made her comments in an informal report to South Bruce Peninsula Council on June 4th.
