Owen Sound Man Accused of Slaying Dog Granted Bail

23-year-old faces numerous charges including animal cruelty.

The man accused of killing a dog during a break-in at an Owen Sound residence in May has been released on bail. 

Wyatt Sturgeon, 23, made an in-person court appearance yesterday and was granted a conditional release.

Sturgeon faces charges of Break and Enter, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Cruelty to an Animal in relation to a break-in at the Dean family's west side residence last month when their 13-year-old black Labrador, Gus, was allegedly killed with an axe.

Candace Dean, the owner of Gus, was present in the courtroom for yesterday's hearing. 

Sturgeon was granted bail under the terms that he remain under constant supervision, not leave his residence without supervision, not possess any weapons, not own any animals and avoid the area of 3rd Avenue West entirely. 

Protestors seeking justice for Gus were outside the courthouse yesterday. After bail was granted many expressed content with the decision due to the strict terms put in place. 

The next court appearance for Sturgeon is set for July 11.
