Province Commits Funding to South Bruce Natural Gas Expansion

Bruce County | by Bayshore News Staff

Communities that will receive this natural gas opportunity include: Paisley, Chesley, Inverhuron, Tiverton, Lurgan Beach, Point Clark, Ripley and Lucknow.

Natural Gas will soon be available to more than 12,000 businesses and residences in Huron and Bruce Counties.

In Kincardine this morning, Huron Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and Bruce-Grey- Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker announced under the new Natural Gas Expansion Support program the EPCOR Southern Bruce Project will begin with a target start of late spring 2019.

The Ontario Government says the EPCOR Southern Bruce Project will be the first of its kind to access funds available under the Natural Gas Support Program brought in by the Ontario Government in late 2018 and is eligible for up to $27.7 million in funding over the long term.

"We're bringing affordable energy to Kincardine, Huron-Kinloss as well as Arran-Elderslie, not only for our communities but for our future as well," said MPP Lisa Thompson.

She says that the switch to natural gas will costs less for homeowners and businesses over time.

Mayors Anne Eadie of Kincardine, Steve Hammell of Arran-Elderslie and Mayor of Huron-Kinloss, Bruce County Warden Mitch Twolan spoke in favour of the announcement on behalf of their municipalities.

It was noted the idea of bringing natural gas to those areas had been in the works since 2012 and sought approval from three different councils from each musicality.

"We got Provincial Government out of the way of making sure that industry can grow in Ontario...which allows companies like EPCOR to come in an invest in local communities," says Thompson.

The Natural Gas Expansion Support program allows for cross-subsidization.

"It all started right here...because it was a business model that they embraced with EMCOR and it's led the way to inspire the legislation and regulations that we introduced."

Kincardine Mayor Anne Eadie says, "It's going to happen in 2019 just like we envisioned."

Communities that will receive this natural gas opportunity include: Paisley, Chesley, Inverhuron, Tiverton, Lurgan Beach, Point Clark, Ripley and Lucknow.
