The 2018 Annual Fire Report is in and to say 2018 was a busy year for the Hanover Fire Department would be an understatement.
Firefighters responded to 186 emergency calls which represents an increase of 46% from 2017.
25% of those calls were for medical assistance, 19% involved motor vehicle resuce and false alarms made up 22% of calls.
Actual fire and explosion calls made up only 8 % with the remaining percentage falling under 'other' category.
In fact between training and emergency calls, Hanover firefighters logged in 4000 staff hours.
Fire Chief Jeff Dentinger calls this a huge investment by volunteer firefighters who put those hours in at all times of the day and night while still doing their day job.
Looking ahead to 2019, there will be a huge focus on certification as Dentinger plans to have all firefighters fully certified. (a few auxiliary members in need of this certification.)
Training will remain another key priority.
2019 will also be the year that the Department welcomes a very important new member.
In June a new pumper tanker truck will arrive. The 2019 Metalfab pumper tanker will be the department’s most powerful one yet, able to carry 1200 U.S. gallons of water.
The Fire Department will also be purchasing and installing a gear washer which will be used to decontaminate firefighter gear.
This will mean the fire department will no longer have to send their gear away for this service, the ability to do the cleaning in-house will save valuable time.
Decontamination is very important as the carcinogens left on firefighter gear can cause cancer.
While it is certainly not in the 2019 budget, Dentinger says a new fire station is something the Town needs to plan for in the future.
The current station is not large enough to house all of the fire department’s equipment, with some of it being stored at a second location.
To house everything under one roof says Dentinger would allow the Hanover Fire Department to work at peak performance.
Mayor Sue Paterson acknowledges the need and says Hanover is looking ahead to the future and will plan accordingly.
