An Owen Sound high school student has been selected for a prestigious scholarship.

Ryan Brown, a 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Owen Sound District Secondary School, has been named a Loran Scholar for 2019.

The Loran Scholars Foundation says the award is dispersed to 35 students across Canada on an annual basis and is valued at $100,000 over four years of undergraduate studies at university.

The Foundation says it is given to young Canadians on the basis of character, service and the promise of leadership.

In 2018-19, there were more than 5,000 applicants for the scholarship.

Brown says he received word on Monday he had been chosen as one of the 35.

"It's certainly surreal and didn't really sink in right away," Brown says. "The support that they're giving me is really amazing and I'm not sure I've completely comprehended it, even now."

Brown says he began the scholarship application process in October 2018 and spent the past month doing interviews and then was put through the regional and national selection process.

The 17-year-old says he hasn't quite chosen his post-secondary education path yet, but is leaning towards attending McGill University in Montreal to pursue International Relations/Development.
