Local Leaders To Talk About Amalgamation

Owen Sound | by Claire McCormack

A Chamber of Commerce Leader's Forum will consider ways to collaborate in Grey Bruce.

The Owen Sound and District Chamber of Commerce is set to hold its annual Leader's Forum Breakfast.

Each year, community members gather to hear local mayors and leaders discuss a different issue or idea.

This year, the chamber wants to examine the possibility of further amalgamation among Ontario municipalities.

The Ontario government led by Doug Ford has said it plans to review 82 municipalities in the province. The review will cover the larger regional municipalities of Durham, Halton, Muskoka District, Niagara, Oxford County, Peel, Waterloo, York and Simcoe County.

None of the communities in Grey Bruce are included in the review. Neighbouring Collingwood, however is.

Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Peter Reesor thinks rural Ontario could be next, "There are winds of change emanating from  the Provincial government that suggest in its effort to cut red tape and costs to taxpayers regional government and  municipalities may be under scrutiny, rationalized and realigned."

Meanwhile, Ford's review aims to look at things like whether or not a regional municipality's distribution of councillors is efficient, if a two-tier government is the best way to go, and among other questions it will look for ways to deliver services more efficiently and try to eliminate duplications.

The  mayors of Owen Sound, Georgian Bluffs, Chatsworth  and Meaford , as well as the Warden of Grey County will discuss areas where they might collaborate ahead of any Provincial initiative.

Reesor says the chamber thinks our area municipalities and the County would be in
a better position to have settled major issues that impact efficiencies, cost savings and 'red - tape' ahead of the Province giving directives to the area.

The public is encouraged to attend.

A  continental breakfast will be served on Tuesday, February 5th from 7:15 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Best Western Inn-on-the-Bay.

Admission is $25 and includes breakfast and coffee.

All attendees must register at www.oschamber.com or by calling 519-376 - 6261, ext. 4
