A weekend that started well for the Goderich Flyers has ended with a 6-3 loss to the Schomberg Cougars in Provincial Junior Hockey League action at the Maitland Rec Centre.
The Flyers Sunday got off to a fast start, with Noah Nurse and Matt Bean setting up Trent Michie with the game's opening goal 2:50 into the first period.
Mitch Fisher followed that up on the power play around five minutes later, firing home a feed from Michie and Matt Bean.
Schomberg replied with two power play markers of their own, to tie the score at 2-2 after 20 minutes of play.
The Flyers were unable to recover, and trailed 5-3 after two periods -- Bean and Nurse assisted on Riley Connors' goal with 1:19 left in the second period.
The Cougars scored the only goal in the final frame.
Michie says playing three games in three days was tough for the Flyers who started with a 7-5 victory at MRC Friday, followed by a 6-2 loss at Mount Forest Saturday.
Michie led the win over the Bulldogs Friday with three goals while Cody Treble had two -- Nurse and Bean contributed singles.
The following night, Chad Treble and Eric Vander Eyk scored the two Goderich goals in Mount Forest.
Michie tells Country 104.9 Sports that the Flyers are pulling together as a team, and have become close-knit especaially in the face of advsersity.
The Flyers continue in seventh place in the PJHL Pollock Division with a 3-13-0-2 record and eight points -- eight back of Hanover.
Goderich starts a three-game road swing Friday in Wingham, followed by games in Schomberg Saturday and Hanover on November 16th.
Michie says the extended period away from home will be important in setting the tone for the Flyers, who play most of their games at home in December and January.
The Flyers return home for their annual Pyjama Toss Night to benefit the Huron County Christmas Bureau Friday, November 23rd against Wingham.
In Sunday's other PJHL Pollock Division play, Spencer Elder scored twice for Walkerton in a 3-3 tie against Wingham while four different players scored in Kincardine's 4-2 victory over Mitchell.
Other cross-division action against PJHL Carruthers Division opponents Sunday saw Klayton Hoelscher score twice for the Patriots, as Mount Forest dropped an 8-4 verdict to Stayner.
Hanover goaltender Luke Aulthouse stopped 32 shots, as the Barons lost to Orillia 3-2.
Play in the PJHL Yeck Division Sunday featured Jonathan Frook's two-goal performance, as the Exeter Hawks defeated Port Stanley 4-1 on the road.
